Mason Interlude

I came home for two and a half weeks because I wanted to be with Sherry while we were going through a very tumultuous period. I'm so glad I did. I've been overwhelmed almost every day since I came back. I'm really glad Sherry didn't have to do it all on her own. The two-month remodeling we started in January was still in-progress at five months; she moved her retirement up from December to May; the mental health school she taught at decided to bring in violent juvenile delinquents who were attacking the staff and plotting murders to facilitate their escape; and she was moving out of her house and into mine. That's in addition to everything else. It has been mayhem!

We have muscled through everything and kept going forward. The remodel job is down to some detail work; Sherry retired and got out of that bad environment; and we got her out if her house and into mine. The house looks like a warehouse, but we made some progress on the weeding out (we both gave up stuff) to get everything situated. While this was all going on we needed to go to the Rio Grande Valley for a5 week so Sherry could take care of some dental work. 

Oh, and someone rammed into her on the road and totaled the car. No injuries, thankfully.

We were busy. I'm really glad I didn't make her do it alone.

But, we made it through and are ready for our vacation. Right now, we are enroute to Dublin to begin our big adventure. After a few days in Ireland we will head over to the continent. We will do some hiking in the Italian Alps (4 days) and Tuscany (8 days) next month and will go to the Olympics in Paris. Sherry's best friend's daughter is competing in the rowing competition. Between all of that we have no plans. We bought Eurail passes which allow for unlimited train travel during the active period. We are planning on going to the train station to see what's leaving next.

AT Attempt #3

I started my third attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail on March 6. Sherry is following along with our RV and will provide support. Hopefully, that will be enough to get me to the end this time. I started at the southern terminus (Springer Mt) in Georgia this time (in the snow) and the trail is much easier than the ones up north. Good thing because I couldn't get in as much training as I normally like to. I'm both out of shape and more than 20 pounds overweight. That's like carrying an extra backpack.  I've been on the trail for a week and even took my first zero to be with Sherry on our anniversary. I'm staying in a shelter tonight for the first time this hike because the forecast is calling for high winds and thunderstorms tonight - part of the adventure. Otherwise, things are going well, and I'm picking up speed. We're hoping to finish around Labor Day, plus or minus. It's difficult for me to do these posts on my phone with my fat fingers but I...

Hot Springs, NC

I managed to do 67 miles in five days to get here from Newfound Gap. That's better than 13 miles per day, twice what I was doing earlier. I'm up to mile marker 275. I'm not about miles, but if you want to finish this thing you have to put in the miles at some point. Still, it was a demanding stretch and I took a zero day here to rest up. Along with the miles, I also did another 9200 feet of ascent and 10700 feet of descent, bringing me to 105,000 feet of total ascent and 109,000 feet of total descent. Sherry and her friend Dana dropped me off at Newfound Gap Friday morning and I hiked 30 miles in two days to finish the national park, spending the last night in this weird shelter that had caging across the front. Wasn't even comfortable. I did all that so I could get to I-40 in the morning and meet my friend Restless.
